          Kosher Food Grocers

Kosher foods refer to a type of food that is prepared or obtained following the regulations of the Jewish religion. There are a large number of reasons that a food can be considered non-kosher. For instance, if any meat or animal byproduct is from an animal not deemed kosher, or even the use of cooking utensils that have been used to prepare non-kosher food. Even food from Israel that has not been properly tithed is considered non-kosher.

When it comes to meat from mammals or birds, the animal must be slaughtered a specific way in order for it to be considered kosher. The practice is known as shechita. Because of this guideline, animals that are killed by hunting cannot be kosher - they must be captured alive and slaughtered per the ritual guidelines. Slaughtering an animal under kosher guidelines is a precise practice that involves cutting the animal's throat. Some people consider this practice to be inhumane, as the animal sometimes doesn't lose consciousness immediately.

All vegetables are naturally considered kosher, however insects are not, so vegetables and fruits are carefully inspected for insect infestation and thoroughly cleaned. Another restriction on kosher foods is that milk and meat cannot be cooked together. Cheese is also a tricky issue, as parts of many cheeses are made of animal byproducts that may not be kosher.
