          Specialty Health Food Grocery Stores

Health food stores are a type of grocery that sells organic food, health food, and local produce. They also often feature nutritional supplements. Some stores that sell food but not supplements prefer to be called "Whole Food Stores." People who are looking to maintain and promote a healthier lifestyle often shop at health food stores. It's also a common place for vegans and vegetarians to shop. In addition, people who have special dietary needs, such as food allergies, or diabetes also shop here.

Whole foods is another term used to describe the types of food found in these stores. Whole foods are foods that are not heavily processed, and often feature additional ingredients that are considered healthy, such as wheat. Foods labeled as organic are those that are grown without the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers. These items are considered healthier by many, as there is no risk of chemicals affecting the consumer's health.

Many health food stores are worker owned cooperatives, or consumer cooperatives. Under this sort of organization, lower prices are possible, which was especially helpful back in the 1960s and 70s when these stores first became popular. Now, health food stores have become mainstream, and are commonly found in many cities.
